FlixBus routes also depart from Budapest to many countries and may be the cheapest option if you have a lot of luggage. However, traveling by bus is only recommended for those who have a great deal of patience and are willing to sacrifice their comfort for a good few hours.
Affordable Destinations, Accommodation, and Activities
Everyone has dream destinations they hope to visit at least once in their lifetime: suppose if you happen to come across a cheap flight or an attractive accommodation offer for one of those places, you surely won’t think twice about reaching for your wallet. You can often find low-cost flights to Albania and North Macedonia, but generally speaking, aside from driving, the main ways to get to the Balkans are by train or bus.
In contrast, there are often low-cost flights to southern Italy, which also offers plenty of affordable lodging, dining, and leisure options, such as Naples or various cities in Sicily. In the north, some Baltic countries offer similarly good travel and tourism opportunities.
As far as staying there and finding accommodation is concerned, hostels are, of course, the cheapest option, and on the one hand, they offer a unique atmosphere, but on the other, they come with numerous inconveniences – and, in extreme cases, risks. As a middle ground, you can find apartments and bed-and-breakfasts at reasonable prices in many countries, such as those mentioned above. When booking accommodations, it’s important to remember that reviews and ratings reveal much more than the description, and even more than the photos.
Cost-effectiveness essentially means the same thing on vacation as it does at home: it’s best to use public transportation whenever possible to reach destinations farther from your place, opt for lesser-known but reliable spots instead of “mainstream” restaurants, and, beyond the must-try culinary experiences, do your own grocery shopping and make the most of activities and attractions that don’t require a separate ticket or admission fee.
