The rush of parties is at least as characteristic and important part of the start of the academic year in September as registering for our courses. This is the period when we are once again close to the friends we missed hanging out with during the summer, but still far from the exam period. Fortunately, in Pécs, it is not difficult to fully enjoy the bustle of the beginning of the school year: the city, as well as the university itself, offers plenty of opportunities for entertainment – be it musical, dancing, party programs, or even other community experiences. In this article, we would like to bring to your attention a few more casual social events, among which almost everyone can find something to their liking.
Concert by Veryraredome on the Szenes stage
Fortunately, as a humanities student in Pécs, we do not have to go far if we desire a vibrant musical life, or perhaps musical curiosities. The Szenes Klub, located within the gates of the Faculty of Humanities, has been home to the most diverse musicians and formations for decades. This is where Döme Lukács – under his stage name Veryraredome –, one of the first representatives of domestic hyperpop, will take the stage on 14 September.
The concert, starting at 10:15 PM, can be a super experience both for lovers of hyperpop, which is still considered a rarity here, in Hungary, as well as for those who are open to novel musical styles and soundscapes, or simply curious about the music of the young Hungarian performer, who creates many elements of it himself – from the lyrics through the beats to the overall sound.
Joint Concert by Kohó and Thomas Rush
Lovers of electronic music should (also) visit Szenes on 18 September, where this time, alongside the venue’s own DJs (namely Kohó), Thomas Rush will be responsible for pumping up the evening. The latter is well-known for his official remixes made from the tracks of various popular Hungarian performers – such as Krúbi and Beton.Hofi – and his club appearances, while the members of Kohó are regular key players at the Szenes parties. If anyone desires a true Friday night club atmosphere, they can experience it at Szenes on the 18th.
Once upon a Time… in Szenes
Sometimes the thought of leaving reality behind and longing for a Fairy Tale (with initial caps) crosses everyone’s mind. On 21 September, we do not have to travel far for a fairy-tale world: Szenes’s fairy-tale-themed costume party, titled ‘Once upon a Time’ will magically transport us to Fairyland within the walls of the university. If someone likes parties with a special atmosphere or costume parties, or simply wants to finally dig that certain Cinderella costume out from the depths of the closet, then head to Szenes on 21 September!
Magical Faculty Evening of the Department of Communication and Media Science
On 23 September, we can drop into the magical world of the Department of Communication and Media Science at Szenes: this year, the autumn comm-media faculty evening is being held with a magic theme! Naturally, the obligatory competitions, team-building games, and the joint party that follows will not be left out this time either – except this time it is recommended to play spritzer pong with a magic wand in one hand, perhaps in a pointed hat and cloak.
The faculty evening, unmissable for the department’s students and highly recommended for their acquaintances and friends, is being held as a potluck party, so the witches and mages can share their favorite miracle foods and elixirs of life with each other.
We Don’t Need Any More Bands from Pécs! (Nem kell több pécsi zenekar!)
As we mentioned above, Pécs has been functioning as a cradle for starting and emerging bands for decades, and even though the ironic joke, “We don’t need any more bands from Pécs!” is heard and appears almost like a slogan, the city continues to steadily produce newer and newer musical formations.
And Szenes warmly welcomes emerging performers: on 28 September, several starting bands will take the stage in the club of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, proving once again that in reality, you can never get enough bands from Pécs. For this very reason, it is always worth visiting these concerts, since many people discover their newest favourite band here.
From the TV Tower to the Rotary Promenade – Potluck Hike
As a university student in Pécs, besides the music and good-spirited parties, the closeness of nature and the Mecsek Mountains, which embrace the city, offer a super recreational opportunity and plenty of community experiences. Taking advantage of this, on 29 September, a joint hike will take place from the TV Tower, across the slopes of the Mecsek, all the way to the Rotary Promenade, where everyone can take out their own “bundle,” closing the program with a shared picnic.
It is definitely recommended for those who desire a little active rest, a super community experience, or would simply like to immerse themselves in the beautiful landscapes of the Mecsek Mountains.
Faculty Evening of the Institute of Psychology – Head to the Wild West!
Hats and lassos out! September concludes on the 30th with a cowboy-and-cowgirl-themed faculty evening at Szenes, not just for psychology students. There will likely be no shortage of creative games and costumes at this faculty evening either, and presumably, the last Szenes party of the month will not be dull.
Thus, this program is also recommended for anyone who perhaps has friends in psychology, is a Western fan, or simply wants to enjoy the first month’s final, a party specifically for students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
So there is no reason to worry: Pécs and the city’s University are once again offering an inexhaustible supply of music, good-spirited programmes, parties, and the most diverse community experiences this academic year. Whether it is hiking, costume parties, or concerts, we think it is undeniable that it will not be difficult to have a good time this September either.
So it is time to carve a few casual programmes into our calendars – we wish you a great time!
