March always brings a new energy to university life: as spring approaches, not only nature but also social life is restored. In the weeks ahead, students can look forward to a variety of events, from thematic parties and hikes to debate nights. In this article, we’ve put together a few event recommendations that definitely shouldn’t be missed.
The month began with the “Nyelvi szakest,” the departmental party organised for the various language institutes (including, for instance, the Institutes of English, German, Romance, and Slavonic Studies), held on 3 March. The theme of the event was the “Olympic Games of ’84,” which evoked a comeback to the retro world. The nostalgic mood was guaranteed, and it was a great success among the participants.
This was followed by a truly atmospheric event, as the “Pszichológia szakest,” the departmental party of the Institute of Psychology was held on 4 March, where the world of Oscars stole the spotlight – elegance, cinema, and a little Hollywood glamour were the highlights of the evening.
On 9 March, a particularly timely and community-building event will take place, as the Clothes Exchange will be held in the main hall. This event isn’t only important from the perspective of sustainability, but also a great opportunity to refresh our wardrobes with new pieces as the warm weather arrives, all in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The series of thought-provoking events will be continued on 10 March by the “PB Vitaest” Debate Night, this time focusing on the relationship between artificial intelligence and artistic creation; Can something that isn’t created by humans be called art? When an algorithm paints a picture, composes music, or writes a text, is it considered a true work of art? And if so, how does this change the role of humans in the processes? How does it shape our thinking when we get immediate answers to almost every question? Does it narrow our horizons, or, on the contrary, open up new possibilities? The main topic of the evening is the era of rapid responses: the importance of filtering information and the role of “probing,” that is, asking the right questions, will also be discussed.
The pace of university life won’t slow down in the second half of the month either, with many exciting programs still to come. For example, the “Kommédia szakest,” the departmental party of the Department of Communication and Media Science, taking place on 18 March, will guide participants into the world of Greek mythology, where gods, heroes, and legends come to life to build a creative and entertaining evening.
After all the partying, there’s no better way to relax than in nature, so on 19 March it’s worth participating in the hike on the Tubes Peak of the Mecsek Mountains to unwind in the fresh air. This friendly outing is easy for beginners to complete and perfect for recharging your batteries and enjoying a community experience.
To close out the month, the “Disney BTKvízest” Quiz Night awaits those interested on 26 March at Mandra Pub. This evening is guaranteed to be full of fun and nostalgia, where everyone can test their knowledge of the world of well-known fairy tales and stories.
In addition, on 11 March, for the first time ever, a special event, the Literature Club, will be held, aimed primarily at international students. The goal of this monthly discussion and exploration of a variety of short stories and literary passages is to bring students closer to literature – and, of course, to each other.
Whether it’s partying, hikes, debate nights or quizzes, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has plenty of community-building and exciting events in store for everyone in March. Be sure to follow the website and Facebook page of Pécsibölcsész, the Student Council of the Faculty, as well as the institutes’ websites for more detailed information about each event. March is sure to be full of experiences – everyone is sure to find a form of entertainment which is to their liking.
